Ask any Dubai tourism blog when to visit the desert and you'll get the same three-word answer: "November to March." It's not wrong but it's also not the full story.
At TopDune Adventures, we operate dune buggies and quad bikes daily across Al Badayer and Al Madam. We've guided rides at 6 AM in July when the sand was still cool and we've sent disappointed visitors home from a 3 PM January session because the wind picked up. The "best time" isn't one answer, it depends on which activity you're booking, who's riding and what you actually want to feel.
This guide breaks down exactly when to ride, by month, by time of day and by activity. No fluff. Just what we've learned from running thousands of desert adventures.

Dubai Desert Climate: The 60-Second Overview
Dubai sits in a hot desert climate zone. That means two distinct seasons and two short shoulder windows in between:
| Period | Avg High | Avg Low | What It Feels Like |
|---|---|---|---|
| December–February | 23–26°C | 14–17°C | Cool mornings, warm sunny afternoons |
| March + November | 28–32°C | 18–22°C | Pleasant, ideal for long sessions |
| April + October | 34–36°C | 23–26°C | Warm, manageable with timing |
| May–September | 38–42°C | 28–32°C | Extreme heat; sunrise-only territory |
The desert at Al Badayer and Al Madam can run 2–4°C hotter than central Dubai during the day because of open dunes and limited shade. It also cools faster after sunset, winter nights can dip below 12°C, which surprises a lot of visitors.
Rainfall: Less than 100mm a year, mostly between January and March. Rain rarely cancels rides, but a rare storm in February or March can soften the dunes and make for unusual riding conditions.
Wind: The shamal (northwesterly desert wind) picks up between March and June. Strong shamal days reduce visibility and we sometimes pause sandboarding when gusts exceed 30 km/h.
Best Months for Dubai Desert Adventures
November: The Season Opener
The first cool air arrives mid-October but November is when the desert truly opens up. Daytime temperatures settle into the upper 20s, mornings drop to a comfortable 18–22°C, and visibility is excellent thanks to low humidity.
This is our personal favourite month at TopDune. The crowds haven't peaked yet, premium buggies like the Can-Am Maverick R X RS are easier to book on weekends, and you can do back-to-back 2-hour sessions without the heat exhausting you.
Ride at: Any time of day. November is the only month where 11 AM, 2 PM, and 5 PM all feel equally comfortable.
December to February: Peak Season
This is when Dubai's tourist numbers spike, and our weekend slots book out 7–10 days in advance. Days are sunny and mild, typically 22–25°C but mornings are genuinely cold by Dubai standards. We've started 6 AM sunrise rides in January at 12°C with riders genuinely needing jackets.
Two things to know during peak season:
-
Book early. Sunset slots from Thursday to Saturday sell out fast especially for 4-seater family buggies and private luxury safaris.
-
Dress in layers. Mornings need a hoodie. By 11 AM you'll be in a t-shirt. Don't underestimate the swing.
March: The Last Comfortable Month
March is a hidden gem. The peak-season crowds thin out after the first week, prices on shared safaris stay competitive, and temperatures stay in the comfortable 25–30°C range until about the third week.
The catch: shamal wind season starts mid-March. Most days are still calm and perfect, but if you're booking 7+ days out, weather forecasts become more important.
April to September: When to Ride and When Not To
We don't recommend midday riding from April through September. That's the honest answer. Surface sand temperatures on exposed dunes can hit 60°C, and even experienced riders feel cooked after 30 minutes.
But and this is what most guides miss sunrise rides during these months are exceptional:
1) 5:30–7:30 AM: Sand is genuinely cool from overnight radiation loss. Air temperature in the dunes is often 25–28°C the same as a winter afternoon.
2) The light at this hour, especially in May and September, is the best photography light of the entire year. Soft, gold, low-angle, no harsh shadows.
3) Almost zero crowds. Premium machines like the Polaris RZR Pro R are wide open.
4) Pricing is identical to winter rates but with summer-quality light and zero waiting.
If you're a serious dune buggy enthusiast or a photographer, summer sunrise might actually beat winter sunset. That's our genuinely contrarian view.
What to avoid in summer:
1) Midday rides (10 AM – 4 PM): genuinely dangerous heat
2) Long sessions (2+ hours): even sunrise has a ceiling
3) Sandstorm season (June–early July): variable visibility
Best Time of Day for Each Activity
Sunrise Rides (6:00–8:00 AM)
Sunrise is the most underrated slot, year-round. Cool temperatures, soft light, empty dunes, and the desert at its quietest.
Best for:
1) Photography (especially in winter long shadows on red sand)
2) First-time riders (calmer headspace, cooler sand)
3) Premium machines like the Yamaha Raptor 700cc easier to handle when ground is cool
4) Couples wanting a quieter, more intimate desert experience
Trade-off: Early pickup. We pick up Dubai hotel guests around 5:00 AM for a 6:00 AM start in winter.
Mid-Morning (9:00–11:00 AM)
Skip this slot in summer. In winter it's solid warmer than sunrise, good light, and most family buggies and quad bikes are available.
Best for:
1) Families with kids (warmer for kids quad rides )
2) Riders who hate early mornings
3) Pairing with hotel breakfast (we start guided rides by 9:30 AM)
Afternoon (2:00–4:00 PM)
Only viable November to March. The light is sharp and contrasty great for action photography, less ideal for portraits. Sand is warm but not painful.
Best for:
1) Winter day-trippers from neighbouring Emirates
2) Riders combining a dune session with an evening at our Bedouin camp
3) Casual rides with no specific timing goal
Sunset Rides (5:00–7:00 PM)
The most-booked slot in our entire schedule. Pickup is at 4:00 PM for a 5:00 PM ride; sunset varies from 5:35 PM (December) to 6:50 PM (June).
Best for:
1) First Dubai desert experience (it's iconic for a reason)
2) Couples on date nights
3) The full safari package dune bashing, sunset photos, BBQ dinner, cultural shows
4) Visitors only doing one desert trip
Trade-off: Books out fastest. From November to February, sunset weekend slots typically sell out a week ahead.
Night Rides and Stargazing (After 7:00 PM)
We run overnight desert safaris and night-camp experiences year-round. Cool temperatures, almost no light pollution outside Dubai's center, and genuinely stunning Milky Way visibility from November to February.
Best for:
1) Stargazing enthusiasts
2) Group celebrations (bachelor/bachelorette parties, milestone birthdays)
3) Visitors wanting a totally different desert experience
Activity-Specific Timing: Match Your Ride to the Hour
This is where most guides stop but the activity you're booking really affects what time you should ride.
Kids' Quad Bikes (Polaris Outlaw 70cc)
-
Best months: November to March only
-
Best time: 9:00–10:30 AM (warm enough for kids, cool enough that they don't tire)
-
Avoid: Sunset slots in winter kids get cold faster than parents expect
- Book kids quad rides
Entry-Level Quads (Kymco MXU 250cc, CF Force 625cc)
-
Best months: October to April
-
Best time: Mid-morning or sunset comfortable temps either way
Expert Sport Quads (Yamaha Raptor 700cc)
-
Best months: November to March
-
Best time: Sunrise cool sand grips better, riders maintain focus longer
-
Why: Manual transmission + 50 HP means heat fatigue affects performance directly. Cool morning sessions are noticeably better.
Family Buggies (Polaris RZR XP 4-Seater)
-
Best months: October to April
-
Best time: Mid-morning or late afternoon
-
Why: Kids in the back seat get sun exposure differently than the driver. Mid-morning has a lower UV angle.
Flagship Performance Buggies (Polaris Pro R, Can-Am Maverick)
-
Best months: November to early March
-
Best time: Sunrise (year-round) or sunset (winter only)
-
Why: These machines produce 225–240 HP. Driver concentration matters. Cool temperatures keep you sharp.
Dirt Bikes (450cc Motocross)
-
Best months: November to March
-
Best time: Sunrise sessions only
-
Why: Manual transmission, full motocross gear, 50 HP. This is the most physically demanding rental in our fleet. Heat exhaustion is a real risk above 28°C.
Desert Safaris (Evening)
-
Best months: Year-round (but October–April is most comfortable)
-
Best time: 3:00 PM pickup → 9:00 PM drop-off is the standard format
-
Why: Evening desert safaris are designed around sunset and dinner. The schedule is fixed.
Five Common Timing Mistakes Tourists Make
After running thousands of rides, we see the same five mistakes repeat:
1. Booking sunset in summer expecting cool weather. Sunset in July is 6:55 PM. By then the dunes have radiated heat all day. Surface temperature is still 35°C+ until 8:30 PM. If you want summer evenings, wait until 7:30 PM minimum or stick to sunrise.
2. Choosing the most powerful buggy in summer. The Polaris RZR Pro R and Can-Am Maverick are incredible machines, but 240 HP at 40°C is genuinely overwhelming for casual riders. In summer, drop a tier. The standard Polaris RZR XP is more fun when you're not battling heat.
3. Underdressing for winter mornings. "It's Dubai, how cold can it get?" Cold enough that we have spare hoodies at the camp for riders who didn't believe us. December–February mornings are 12–18°C with wind chill on a moving buggy making it feel sub-10°C.
4. Booking only one slot when you have two days. The desert at sunrise and sunset are genuinely different places. If you have two days in Dubai, do both. Most visitors who do this say the sunrise ride is what they remember most.
5. Skipping the safari because of the buggy ride. Self-drive buggies and the Evening Desert Safari target completely different experiences. Adrenaline rides give you the rush; the safari gives you the cultural immersion BBQ dinner, camel rides, live fire shows. If time allows, do both on separate days.
When to Book Your Adventure (vs When to Ride)
Booking timing and riding timing are two different things and both matter for your trip.
| Period | Book Ahead By |
|---|---|
| November–February weekends | 7–10 days |
| November–February weekdays | 2–3 days |
| March, October weekends | 4–5 days |
| April–September | 24–48 hours is usually enough |
| Eid holidays + UAE National Day | 14+ days |
| Premium machines (Pro R, Maverick) | 10+ days year-round |
We hold free cancellation up to 24 hours before any ride. That means there's almost no downside to booking earlier and a real downside (sold-out slots) to booking late.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the absolute best month to visit the Dubai desert?
November. Cool enough for comfort, warm enough for sunsets, fewer crowds than December–February, and the desert at its visual best after summer dust has cleared.
Can you ride dune buggies in Dubai in summer?
Yes — but only at sunrise (5:30–8:00 AM) or after 8:00 PM. Mid-day riding from May to September is genuinely unsafe due to surface temperatures and heat exhaustion risk.
What about Ramadan?
Most desert operators (including us) run modified schedules during Ramadan. Daytime rides are quieter; evening/iftar safaris become more popular. Book ahead and confirm timings, as schedules shift annually.
Are there cheaper times to ride?
Slightly. Weekday mornings April–September are our quietest periods, and we occasionally run weekday-only promotions. But the price difference between peak and off-peak is small (10–15%) . The bigger savings come from booking sunrise instead of sunset.
Is sandstorm season real?
Yes. Shamal winds peak between March and June, occasionally causing reduced visibility. We don't typically cancel rides for shamal wind unless gusts exceed 40 km/h, but it can affect photography and sandboarding quality.
Best time for desert photography?
Sunrise in summer. Long, soft, golden light with low-angle shadows. There were almost no crowds. The trade-off is the 4:30 AM hotel pickup but every photographer we've taken out has said it was worth it.
Ready to Plan Your Desert Adventure?
Whatever month you visit, the desert has something for you. The trick is matching the activity, the machine, and the time of day to what you actually want to feel, adrenaline at sunset, soft light at sunrise, and family fun in the morning.
At TopDune Adventures, we run rides daily from Al Badayer and Al Madam, with hotel pickup from Dubai and Sharjah included in most experiences. Our fleet ranges from kids' 70cc quads (from AED 100) to the world's most powerful sport buggies, the Can-Am Maverick R X RS (240 HP). Whatever season you visit, we'll match you with the right machine and the right time.
